In my practice I treat many women for various gynaecological problems. One of the most common is period pain, otherwise known as Dysmenorrhea. It is painful menstruation that arises before, during and/or after menstruation. The pain is mainly in the lower abdomen, however, it can occur in the lower back and run down through the legs.

It can be caused by Emotional Factors - (strong emotions, such as depression, anger). This may lead to accumulation and stagnation of the Qi and Blood which manifests as painful menstruation; Cold/Damp Exposure - contact with cold and damp environments (climates, climate controlled buildings such as air conditioning, old buildings) and excessive consumption of cold and damp foods (fruit juices, ice cream). Symptoms may be exacerbated during menstruation leading to dysmenorrhea and existing LV/KD Deficiencies - constitutional weaknesses in women who have had multiple child-births, thus depleting the KD or Jing, worsened by the loss of blood during menstruation.

Acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine can reduce the stagnation of Qi and Blood, moving the menstruation flow, reducing the cold and damp in the system, helping the digestion system to break up the food and absorb the nutrients strengthening the KD channel

, minimising pain and discomfort.
